Vaishakh Amavasya Vrat Katha

Long ago, there was a Brahmin named Dharmavarna. He was very religious. Once a sage told him that in the age of Kali, there is no deed greater than remembering the name of Lord Vishnu. The merit obtained by remembering the name of the Lord is greater than the merit obtained by performing a Yajna. Dharmavarna was convinced by this and left his home to become a sannyasi and wander around. One day, while wandering, he reached the world of ancestors where his forefathers were in distress. They told him that they were suffering because there was no one left to perform their Shraddha (ritual offering to ancestors) since Dharmavarna had become a sannyasi. They requested him to return to the household life, have children and perform their Shraddha on the day of Vaishakh Amavasya. Dharmavarna promised to fulfill their request and returned to the worldly life. On the day of Vaishakh Amavasya, he performed the Shraddha according to the prescribed rituals and thus freed his ancestors from their misery.
