Have you heard of ‘Bhav Madhya’ or the ‘house cusp’? Bhav Madhya is the focal point of any house which has the maximum influence on that house. Any planet placed around the Bhav Madhya is bound to give the maximum results depending upon the signification of that planet. 

The baby name philosophy takes the maximum advantage of this ‘Bahv Madhya’ analogy. There are twelve signs of the zodiac with nine Navamsha division each. This makes 108 Navamsha of the entire zodiac each corresponding to a syllable or a unit of pronunciation. These 108 Navamsha are the ‘Nama Pada’ or the ‘Nama Nakshatra’. 

Let us put this in a example; we tend to strengthen the fourth Navamsha of the Cancer sign if we address a person having a name ‘Lalit’. So, is it wrong keeping the name based on birth Nakshatra: Although it is not entirely wrong but sometimes the purpose to have a powerful name gets defeated. I will try and explain how.

Wrong name selection: 

Janm Nakshatra falling in the 6th house: Suppose the Janm Nakshatra or the birth constellation falls in the sixth house. This means whenever someone calls the native’s name than the phonetic sound of the janm Nakshatra influences the sixth house of the native. The sixth house corresponds to diseases and enemies. This means that the natives name becomes a strengthening ground for his/her enemies or diseases. A grossly wrong choice it would become.

Janam Nakshatra falling in the 8th house: 8th house is for miseries, death, and long ailment. It is one the worst trik-bhava for the horoscope. Now, if the Janam Nakshatra or the birth constellation of the native falls in the 8th house of the horoscope and the name the native gets is as per it, his miseries are certainly going to multiply as and when his name is called.

Janm Nakshatra falling in the 8th house:  Janm Nakshatra falling in 12th house and the native gets the name as per it, it again strengthens his 12th house, the house for loss, as and when is name is called. 

So, when the lord has given you a powerful tool by which you could strengthen your beneficial houses then why not use it.

When it’s a perfect time for Namakaran?

As per traditions, Namakaran ceremony is conducted after 'Jatakarma' sanskara, a formality of passage celebrating the child's birth. Nowadays, with an increment in the birth rate in country, the ritual Namakaran or selecting a baby name as per astrology ritual has become a part of Namkaran ceremony, both have performed within a few weeks of the birth. After taking a closer look, the naming ceremony or namakaran which should be held 11 days birth. Immediately preceding the 'Sutika' or 'Suddhikaran' duration when mother and child are imprisoned to intensive post-natal care. However, 11th day is not generally fixed, and it can be decided by the parents based on monk or an advice of astrologers and can be postponed even up to the child's first birth anniversary. 

The Traditional Hindu Practice 

Both mother and father of the baby starts the Namkaran ritual with contents such as pranyama, prayer and chanting of mantra in presence of a priest. In absence of father, the grandfather or the uncle of the child performs the ritual with prayers to the God of Fire, the elements, and the spirits of the ancestors. 

Some rice grains are spread on a bronze thali or a dish and some fathers write the chosen name using a gold stick simultaneously chanting the God's name. Then he whispers the name of the child in new born baby’s ear, this ritual is performed by repeating the name four times along with the prayer. All the members of the family who are present in the ritual repeats few words once the priest formally accepts the name. This may be followed by the blessings of elders along with gifts, and ritual ends with a feast with family and friends. Usually, family astrologer also presents the child's horoscope at this ceremony. 

Selecting a Name

Hindu families rely on Vedic astrology to arrive at selecting child name. The initial letter is considered especially auspicious, and there are five general principles of determining what the initial letter of a child's name should be:

1. Janam Nakshatranam (by lunar asterism, composed of the birth star of the child, the position of planets at the time and date of birth, and the moon sign);

2. Masanam (according to the child's month of birth);

3. Devatanama (after the family deity);

4. Rashinama (according to the child's Zodiac sign); and

5. Samsarikanama (the worldly name), as an exception to all the above.

It is traditionally believed that a boy's name should have letters in even numbers (2, 4, 6, 8) and girls should consist of odd-numbered letters (3, 5, 7, 9), but 11 is considered the most auspicious length for both genders.
